  Ahn's Won-lee-chim (Acupuncture)

Won-lee means principle, as of science. And Chim means acupuncture.

The theory of Ahn’s Won-lee-chim is based on traditional Korean medicine theory, and basically it is same with Chinese’s. But difference is to use limbs points by the theory of Five-element more than body points. Five elements are Wood (Liver/Gall Bladder), Fire (Heart/Small intestine. And Sim-po/Sam-cho), Earth, Metal and Water. Sim-po and Sam-cho are existing fact but not detected by modern science yet. To make a good harmony of organic system is the goal of treatment, and then disease will go away.

What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is a complete medical system that is used from diagnose to treat illness, manage chronic disorders, alleviate pain, and promote health through prevention and maintenance. It can be used for physical, emotional, and psychological disorders. And it was only medicine and played as a major traditional medicine in Korea and China until about 100 years ago.

Acupuncture has been widely used to treat a variety of pain conditions including many other diseases for more than 3000 years. And yet is very difficult to practice, not just insert needle(s) into human’s body. Several thousand of acupuncture points are spread all over the body and has their own function respectively.

How does Acupuncture control pain? Or just for symptom? Unfortunately we still can’t explain exactly why does the acupuncture is working for control pain from the view of Western science. On the other hand, it is very possible and clearly explainable from the view of Korean medicine. However, some evidences are showing to stimulate the release of endorphins and enkephalins, which are chemicals that the body naturally makes for pain relief. According to David Eisenberg, M.D., a Clinical Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, there is also evidence that Acupuncture influences the production and distribution of many neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Neurotransmitters transmit nerve impulses to the brain, and neuromodulators are produced by the neurons that affect the neurotransmitters. In turn, these actions alter the perception of pain to the brain and the body. But evidence is still lacking same as Western medicine. The absolute evidence is patient’s result after treatment.

In Luke 8:43 of Holy Bible, And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 8:44 Came behind him, hand touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 8:45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 8:46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue(KI) is gone out of me…
There is no evidence, but I personally believe that issue of blood has cured. Ying and Yang is the basic concept in Korean medicine and if one is diseased, then influence to the other.

To study for this medicine is not just memorizing but has to fully understanding basic theory of it’s function, how to work by itself, how to work with other(s) and how to influence to the body. And also acupuncturist has to know why patient had pain or disease, the root cause.

For one brief example, pains of menstruation are coming periodically. And some are include depression, sadness, irritability, crying, headache, easy to anger, distention of abdomen or breasts, headaches and insomnia. Some are very intensity and some are very mild and some are very serious. Some are attacking or hurting others in rare case.

Listen to the body and do not ignore the signs from body. The normal cycle of period is 28 days, which is the rhythm of nature and no pain or comfortable is normal. If someone has any pain or emotional problem while or before menstruation, means the body wants to be treated.

However, many of people are not paying attention about their abnormal condition. Has to know why, from emotional strain include, but not limited to, anger, frustration, upset, dislike, diet of dairy products-greasy foods, over work and excessive sexual activity, etc.

First, we can divide into two aspects, Excessive condition and Deficiency condition.

  1. Excessive condition is involved with Liver-Ki stagnation or Phlegm-heat flame upward.
    • Liver-Ki stagnation is showing that abdominal and/or breast distension, clumsiness, moodiness, depression, hypochondrial pain and distension. In this case the tongue may show normal in lighter case, and redness on sides in chronic case. Pulse will showing wiry, especially on left side.
    • Phlegm-heat problem will show, but not limited to, agitation, depression, some manic problem, aggressiveness, oppression feeling of chest, red face, bloody eyes.
Tongue will show red, sticky-yellow coating. Pulse will show wide slippery and rapid.
  2. Deficiency condition is involved with deficiency of Liver-Blood, Yin deficiency of Liver and Kidney, or Yang deficiency of Spleen and Kidney.
    • Liver-Blood deficiency is showing depression and sadness before the period, slight abdominal and breast distention, scanty periods, tiredness, poor memory, poor sleep, slight dizziness and a dull-pale tone.
Tongue will show pale, maybe on the sides. Pulse will show choppy or fine, slightly wiry on left side.
    • Liver Yin and Kidney Yin deficiency are showing slight breast distention and irritability before the period and occasionally after it, sore back and knees, dizziness, blurred vision, poor memory, insomnia, dry eyes and throat and feeling of heat on chest, palm of hands and feet. Tongue shows as red, no coating. Pulse is floating-empty.
    • Spleen Yang and Kidney Yang deficiency are showing slight pre-menstrual tension with depression and sadness, slight abdominal and breast distention, tiredness, back pain, feeling cold, frequent and clear urination and possibly low sexual desire.
Tongue shows pale and swollen. Pulse shows deep and weak.
Approaching method of this medicine is far different from Western’s as above, and treat not only symptoms but also root causes at same time. Acupuncture theory believes that there are 12 major meridians on each side and two more major meridians on front and back respectively. These meridians are running through the body which relate to the internal organs: lungs, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, bladder, kidney, triple warmer, gall bladder, liver, and gate of life. Run all over the body from head to toes, from interior to exterior, vise versa. There are about 460 specific Acupuncture points located on these meridians.
By inserting a needle into an Acupuncture point, KI (qi in Chinese. Life or life source) will be influenced. Manipulating the needle can build KI if there is a deficiency, or drain KI if it is an excessive condition. The goal of this medicine is through the balancing, and then a person’s health can be healthier or restored.

What is an Acupuncture treatment like? A Doctor who has studied this medicine can do acupuncture treatments. Traditional course was; a Doctor (master) picked a disciple up and trained as preceptor-ship for many years. Disciple had to learn almost like copy to his master, like down load his knowledge, experiences and techniques. And had to wait until his master letting him to see a patient. Master will carefully paying attention to his disciple for the level while teaching for 10, 15 or more years. This is not just for interesting but someone’s health, the life. That’s why it was so hard to be a Doctor, besides not by applicant’s willing, but by the master’s judge. The master checked applicant’s personality, character, ability, attitude, family background and many other things. This discipline method was existed until modern education system was settled.

Nowadays, graduated from some type of Korean (Chinese) school of medicine. Some of doctors are still like to learn more about this medicine after they passed licensing examination, which means just entry level to see patients. This means not enough to practice. However, the patient will fill out a questionnaire about their medical history, and will then speech individually with the Acupuncturist. The Acupuncturist will study the patient, taking into account aspects of health that may be different than Western medicine (ex-twelve radial pulses from the wrist). Touching on abdomen or other area of patient. Specific needles are then placed in the appropriate sites. Acupuncture calls 1 or 2 per each treatment, depends on patient’s condition, it is very rare to use more than 6 needles per a visit. Acupuncture itself is essentially painless. The duration of the treatments will vary for individuals. The acupuncturist may also recommend changes in diet, lifestyle, and physical activity.
